Bankers to give Reggae 6 rollicking start
IT's hardly likely that Saturday's Reggae 6, the first of a three-meet holiday carnival, will reach last week's mandatory-payout heights, $478,689, with three bankers to start the day.
HI SLEW SQUARED, STORM and SIR DON have five-star written all over their respective form lines, even if read lying down.
Among the Canadian bought fillies bought by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association of Jamaica as yearlings in 2023, HI SLEW SQUARED showed promise on July 12 at six furlongs, beaten by American ROCKET FIRE SEB finishing a neck away from fellow Canadian, SASH ON, who has since got off the mark.
Trainer Patrick Lynch has removed HI SLEW SQUARED's figure-eight for the seven-furlong event but retained the blinkers in which she got significantly closer on her second outing, July 12, when beaten by ROCKET FIRE SEB and SASH ON.
STORM hardly ever loses a $700,000 claiming race, beating CONUNDRUM by almost a distance on September 7. Jason DaCosta claimed the 10-year-old out of that race as part of his arsenal to keep Anthony Nunes at bay, returning at the exact level for another romp.
The late Don Wehby's American two-year-old, SIR DON, won like a don on debut, effortlessly clocking 46.4 at four furlongs straight. The Spun To Run-Enamoured colt won going away by almost nine lengths, suggesting seven furlongs should be a breeze.
Circle the field in the fourth by using SHEER DE JOUR, BALLISTIC MISSILE, NOBLE MONARCH, LUCKY PAPA and speedy YORKIST. Non-winners of four races at age four, improving runners could upstage exposed bridesmaids.
MS CHERRY gets the nod as a banker in the fifth, returning off a 10-week lay-up but armed with sufficient back class to see off rivals at five and a half furlongs. Prior to chasing home speedy BOLD MOVE at five furlongs straight on August 1, MS CHERRY, at five and a half, was running out of steam close home after making a sweeping move at rivals leaving the half-mile marker.
Close the Reggae 6 with a trio of runners, three-year-old maidens at five furlongs straight, by using FANTASTIC HEDGE, THE MANIPULATOR and BRILLIANT MIND, horses who have shown speed either at exercise or on racedays.
