Sisters might be upset about dad’s will

March 08, 2021

Dear Pastor,

I have three sisters. They went to college and they have married professional men. I did not go to college. They all left home after they got married. My parents tried their best with us.

After getting married, my sisters left home as was expected. Two of them migrated, but they do not behave as if they have parents in Jamaica that they can help. My father has given up the farming and whenever me or my mother ask them for anything, they find it very hard to send some help and we know that they are doing well.

I have visited my two sisters in America and they do not lack anything. I am doing a little security work, but I wish I did not have to. I hate to leave my parents alone at nights. The sister who is living in Jamaica is very helpful at times, but she is trying to build a house with her husband. I regret not going to college. My father has made a will and I saw it. He has willed the house to me. He has left land for my sisters. I have a boyfriend but we do not have children. I told him what my father has put in the will and he said that my sisters are going to give me trouble over that. My mother says I deserve more than just the house. She said that I should get everything because sometimes I use all my pay to pay the bills. I am hoping that my boyfriend would marry me. I know he is wild. He loves his girls, but I hope I can help to settle him down.

Dear C.J.,

Don't be discouraged. Do your very best to help your parents. You do not have formal education like your sisters, but you are not a fool. You have nothing to be ashamed of. You have the blessing from your parents, especially your father and no one can take that away from you. You should not have discussed what is in your father's will with your boyfriend. Indeed, you shouldn't discuss that with anybody. It would be silly for your siblings to fight you over what your father has left for you but perhaps what you should do is to have a talk with a lawyer who might appropriately advise you and I wish you well.
