Measures in place to keep prisoners safe, says corrections department
The Department of Correctional Services says that inmates, wards, and staff at penal facilities across Jamaica are safe and that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard their lives and well-being as the country prepares for the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The department says comprehensive emergency preparedness plans have been activated across all correctional institutions.
In alignment with these plans, all visits to correctional institutions have been suspended until further notice.
The corrections department says it remains vigilant and fully committed to maintaining order and care during this period.
"Our officers and staff are on high alert and continue to work around the clock to ensure that safety protocols are observed and that the welfare of all individuals in custody is prioritised."
