Nicholson at the double
Reggae Boy Shamar Nicholson scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in the Belgium's Jupiler Pro League yesterday to lift his club Charleroi to fifth place in the points standing. The former Boys' Town forward was on target in the 22nd and 57th minutes as Charleroi blanked home team Standard Liege 3-0. The win moved Charleroi to 29 points, eight behind leaders Royal Union SG.
Nicholson's double put him fourth among the goalscorers in the league. Three other players have scored 10 goals but Nicholson's three assists, is the tie-breaker. None of the other players have an assist. With the season just reaching the halfway stage, the 24-year-old forward has already gone past his best goalscoring output in a season for the club since joining them in the 2019-20 season. In his opening season, he got eight goals and nine the following year. With as many as 17 matches left to play Nicholson could be eyeing as many as 20 goals this season. That would be his highest for a season since he left Boys' Town for Domzale in Slovenia in 2017. His best return, 13 goals, came in the 2018-19 season of the Slovenia Prva Liga. Nicholson has also been a consistent goalscorer for Jamaica since making his debut in 2017. He has 10 goals in 27 matches for the Reggae Boyz. This includes two in the current World Cup qualifying campaign, four in the Concacaf Nations League and two in the 2019 Gold Cup.
