Do not pressure kids - Shaw

President of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA), Wayne Shaw, has called on coaches of Under-10 players to focus on development and having fun and not only on winning.

Shaw was speaking at the launch of the inaugural KSAFA/Guardian Life Under-10 competition yesterday.

I am really pleased that finally we are going to have an Under-10 competition. It has been recognised that there is a gap in our development in comparison to international football. Suitable competitions from an earlier age will enhance the skill and talents of footballers and this will augur well for our football development. But I implore all the coaches not to pressure the kids about winning because at this stage it is about having fun.

TWO-DAY TOURNAMENT

We also implore parents, who sometimes go overboard, to display good sportsmanship and abide by the referees' decisions," he said.

Also speaking at yesterday's launch was Eric Hosin, CEO of Guardian Life, sponsors of the two-day tournament.

Eighteen teams will participate at the inaugural competition, which takes place at the Football Factory on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. and on Sunday at 11 a.m. The teams will be divided into four groups with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals on Sunday.

The teams: Arnett, Ballaz Academy, Barbican, Browns Town, Cavalier, Central Kingston, Duhaney Park, Emanuel Christian Academy, Harbour View, Holy Family, Maxfield Norbrook Strikers, Premier Football, Rockfort, Santos, Shortwood, Tivoli Gardens, and Waterhouse.
