Tommy Lee Dixon is hooked on dancing
Tommy Lee Dixon can remember dancing from as far back as his schooldays at Clan Carthy Primary School in Kingston.
Being from the inner city, Dixon didn't want to be on the corner like everybody else and decided that he was going to make something out of his life. He chose dancing to help him do that.
He participated in the popular Jamaica Cultural Development Commission competitions and was named as the best folk dancer in the whole competition. This was only the start for him, as later in 2016 he started his Dancin' Dynamites journey.
He entered the competition and placed fifth in 2016, but in 2017, his group, Citi Dancers, won the top prize. Dixon, 24, believes that his consistency on social media is what sets him apart, and this is what he says caught the attention of popular entertainer Jennifer 'Jenny Jenny' Small from the beginning.
"'Cause I keep my thing consistent on the media, I never fell asleep, and Jenny see my work and I been working with her and she see that I go for mine own and whatever I want I go for it, you know," he said. His efforts to be consistent did not go in vain, as he was recently named the recipient of the Outstanding Dynamite Award for continuing to carry the spirit of the competition. Dixon, upon hearing this news, said he wasn't shocked.
"I'm grateful for that 'cause out of all the Dynamites that come out of that competition, why me? You know? So I was not, like, shocked, in a way, but was just happy," he said. The award winner shared that there was never a time when he felt like giving up on dancing, and that there isn't a set routine that he follows. But he loves to play football to keep himself active.
He advised other dancers to focus on themselves because in Jamaica, some people try to break others down and "tell you seh you cya do it and dem ting deh".
"You just affi block people from your brain and let your brain work. If you want something, you just affi go after it, 'cause me see that fi myself," said Dixon. He has been in a number of music videos with several artistes, such as Stefflon Don and Ky-Mani Marley. The dancer is currently in the United States trying to achieve more goals as he works on creating collaborations for him and his team.
